An introduction to facial fat grafting

For people who want to delay or reduce the sagging of the face and the formation of wrinkles, there is a procedure called facial fat grafting. Plastic surgeons take small portions of fat from the stomach and thighs and inject to the skin on the face. The goal of the procedure is to allow for more volume on the face, thereby restoring a youthful appearance.

The surgical procedure, in fact, has two benefits. First, it reduces sagging and wrinkling. Second, it takes away fat from places where patients don’t want it. While patients normally undergo facial fat grafting to look more youthful and appealing, other patients who have suffered traumatic injuries on their faces and have deformities also undergo the procedure.

Talking to a facial plastic surgeon is the first step for people who are not happy with the way they look. Through consultation, patients can learn about the procedure and be warned about the minor side-effects that naturally come with plastic surgery, such as a bit of scarring and bruising. Patients can also learn about preparations for the procedure and what to do after, to ensure a speedy and safe recovery.

Facial fat grafting is a common procedure that plastic surgeons have performed on countless people from all walks of life, for a variety of reasons. But just like any surgical procedure, it’s best for patients to do research before committing to it.

Questions to ask your surgeon before getting a facial plastic surgery procedure

Aside from being physically and mentally prepared and knowing whether one is a good candidate for a procedure, any would-be facelift patient should ask the surgeon a variety of questions to guarantee success and overall satisfaction. Here are some of the most essential things to inquire about.

Everything begins with a one-on-one consultation. Take this time to know is if the surgeon is board-certified. Having such certification by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery answers many complementary and very important questions about that surgeon’s training, experience, and commitment to patient safety.

Secondly, ask the would-be cosmetic surgeon how often they perform the procedure or procedures you are interested in. You need to make sure that the surgeon you will choose can deliver the outcome you desire and has solid experience and lots of satisfied patients. A facial plastic surgeon specializes in the procedure, so you should opt for one for, say a facelift or for facial rejuvenation over other surgeons whose practice is centered on other cosmetic surgery procedures.

You then need to ask about the recovery process. This is key in determining whether this is the right time for you to have a cosmetic procedure or not, as healing will undoubtedly keep you from following your normal, everyday routine such as work and exercise. Can you handle being away for days or weeks?

Lastly, and part of this query, make sure you know of any other specific restrictions, like lifting heavy objects or even carrying small children weeks after the surgery.
