How To Best Prepare For Rhinoplasty Surgery

So you have decided to get a nose job. You’re now determined to address your nose issue (either too big, too wide, or misshapen from birth or an unfortunate incident), and you’ve chosen a specialist to do the procedure. What should you do next as a patient to best prepare for the surgery?

Note that while rhinoplasty surgery can be done in less than two hours, the entire process entails commitment in time, energy, and making careful preparations before and after the surgery. It’s not something that should be taken lightly, given how it can effectively address cosmetic and functional concerns ranging from a disproportionate nose to one that’s been broken or collapsed from trauma.

In the weeks leading up to the surgery, it’s crucial that the patient prepares their body and mind for the changes that will occur. Do everything to stay healthy and make room for a speedy recovery. Avoid certain things, specifically aspirin and other blood-thinning medications, smoking, and alcohol. Notify the surgeon of any illness no matter how minor it may be, and start filling prescriptions for the antibiotic, sleeping aid, and pain medications that will be needed.

Stock up on lip balm and cold beverages, as your mouth will become very dry from breathing through it. Have “soft” food around, too, as well as comfortable clothes to wear while recovering at home. Front-buttoning tops, for instance, are better than those pulling over one’s head.

Ask a family member or friend to help out on the first two days and nights post-surgery, as well as drive you home after the procedure. Feeling anxious about the whole thing? Schedule an appointment with your surgeon to discuss concerns and alleviate those worries.
