How To Best Prepare For Rhinoplasty Surgery

So you have decided to get a nose job. You’re now determined to address your nose issue (either too big, too wide, or misshapen from birth or an unfortunate incident), and you’ve chosen a specialist to do the procedure. What should you do next as a patient to best prepare for the surgery?

Note that while rhinoplasty surgery can be done in less than two hours, the entire process entails commitment in time, energy, and making careful preparations before and after the surgery. It’s not something that should be taken lightly, given how it can effectively address cosmetic and functional concerns ranging from a disproportionate nose to one that’s been broken or collapsed from trauma.

In the weeks leading up to the surgery, it’s crucial that the patient prepares their body and mind for the changes that will occur. Do everything to stay healthy and make room for a speedy recovery. Avoid certain things, specifically aspirin and other blood-thinning medications, smoking, and alcohol. Notify the surgeon of any illness no matter how minor it may be, and start filling prescriptions for the antibiotic, sleeping aid, and pain medications that will be needed.

Stock up on lip balm and cold beverages, as your mouth will become very dry from breathing through it. Have “soft” food around, too, as well as comfortable clothes to wear while recovering at home. Front-buttoning tops, for instance, are better than those pulling over one’s head.

Ask a family member or friend to help out on the first two days and nights post-surgery, as well as drive you home after the procedure. Feeling anxious about the whole thing? Schedule an appointment with your surgeon to discuss concerns and alleviate those worries.

Is Otoplasty a Good Idea?

Otoplasty refers to the reshaping of the pinna or outer ear via surgery, aiming to improve its appearance or correct a natural deformity.  In this reconstructive surgery, the outer ear is built up after a congenital deformity or an accident.  Think of it as pinning back the ears for them to look better.

Here are some considerations when evaluating the need for otoplasty.

Indications:  This procedure is indicated for correction of ears protruding more than 20 mm and at an angle higher than 35 degrees from the occipital scalp.

Addressing the problem in children:  Prominent ears can prove to be bothersome for kids and may subject them to bullying.  Ears can be considered prominent if they stick out more than 2 cm from the side of the head.  Otoplasty is, in fact, more commonly performed during childhood, although it can be done on patients of any age.

Issues in adulthood:  Adults with protruding ears can feel embarrassment to the point where it gets in the way of daily life.  The “condition” may prevent them from wearing a helmet or other headgear, and they may be distracted or concerned about their overall appearance.

Post-operative considerations: There are several things that otoplasty patients need to do after the surgery, including avoiding touching or rubbing the ears, wearing headband, avoiding smoking, keeping the head elevated for a couple of weeks, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure and extreme temperatures.

Brow Lift: Turning That Frown Upside Down

Many of the main indicators of aging can be found on a person’s face. One of the most common (and most annoying) of these indicators are frown lines. These lines are the bane of many women since daily skincare routines aren’t enough to keep these lines from appearing. Also, many of these daily skincare routines are frustratingly temporary.

It’s a good thing there’s the brow lift, which is a more permanent solution to frown lines.

Brow and foreheads are the first and most affected areas of the face when it comes to lines. As people age, the slightest expression can curl the skin into these lines. This loss of elasticity also causes the eyebrows to go down and droop. The result is that a person looks more tired than they really are. Other factors that contribute to the wrinkling include sun and wind exposure, and gravity.

A brow lift “lifts” the skin that’s sagging on the forehead, upper eyelids, and eyebrows, to give a person a younger look. Brow lift comes in two types – classic and endoscopic. Classic brow lift is done with a single cut from ear level, around the hairline. Facial plastic surgeons know where to cut for minimal scarring. Endoscopic lift, however, utilizes shorter cuts in the scalp. A small camera will be inserted into a cut, and the surgeon will perform the procedure from there.

What Patients Can Expect From Brow Lift Surgery

Source: Pinterest.com
As people age, so does their skin. Along with other factors, aging causes the skin to sag in various parts of the body. However, one of the first places on the human body this change can be felt is the forehead. Eyebrows become heavy and frown lines appear. This is where brow lift surgery comes in.

Through brow lift surgery, also known as forehead surgery, droopy eyebrows can be corrected. It’s a perfectly safe procedure that will restore the appearance of a person once looking fatigued.

Patients undergoing brow lift surgery can expect a number of benefits. Upper eyelids will be raised. The creases in the forehead will be smoothed out. The brow that sags and droops over the eyelid will be lifted. Frown lines between eyebrows will be dramatically reduced. Overall, the patient can expect to look younger and more refreshed.

Brow lift procedures themselves have evolved. No longer will patients have to undergo ear-to-ear incisions on the scalp. A new method called endoscopic brow lift makes the surgery as painless as possible with minimal cutting. The small incisions to be made can reduce swelling and quicken recovery like never before. And one of the best parts about it is the scars will barely be noticeable.

Stein Plastic Surgery offers a wide range of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments including endoscopic brow lifts. Founded by Dr. Adam Stein, the practice is committed to delivering superlative skill, care, and support. It serves clients in the Raleigh/Durham area and across North Carolina and the Southeastern U.S. Learn more about Stein Plastic Surgery here.

The Benefits Of Brow Lift Surgery

It doesn’t take a lot for gravity, aging, and the elements to take their toll on one’s face. The brows and forehead are among the first areas to bear the brunt, leading to heaviness of the eyebrows, frown lines, as well as deep furrows. Brow lift surgery, however, could be a handy solution to those droopy brows that give the appearance of sadness, fatigue, or stress.

Smoothens facial creases
A brow lift and removal of excess skin and tissue will smooth away unsightly signs of aging on the upper face. Frown lines, or those horizontal lines found across the brow and vertical lines between brows, disappear as skin becomes smoother and more youthful-looking.

Reverses a tired and angry expression
One can look always tired or angry when there are lines between the brows, creases on the forehead, and a brow line that perpetually sags. Brow lift surgery can make one look more approachable, calm, and happy on the exterior, especially with raised brows and nonexistent lines.

Leads a more alert, youthful look
This surgery opens up the eyes, as a sagging brow can make the upper eyelids look tired and so difficult to apply makeup on. A brow lift can work its magic for this purpose. If older techniques require a massive incision that stretched from ear to ear on the scalp, new advanced, minimally invasive ones involve only tiny incisions along the hairline. This means less swelling, speedier healing, and minimal, nearly unnoticeable scarring. The results could be as natural-looking as they can get.

Questions to ask your surgeon before getting a facial plastic surgery procedure

Aside from being physically and mentally prepared and knowing whether one is a good candidate for a procedure, any would-be facelift patient should ask the surgeon a variety of questions to guarantee success and overall satisfaction. Here are some of the most essential things to inquire about.

Everything begins with a one-on-one consultation. Take this time to know is if the surgeon is board-certified. Having such certification by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery answers many complementary and very important questions about that surgeon’s training, experience, and commitment to patient safety.

Secondly, ask the would-be cosmetic surgeon how often they perform the procedure or procedures you are interested in. You need to make sure that the surgeon you will choose can deliver the outcome you desire and has solid experience and lots of satisfied patients. A facial plastic surgeon specializes in the procedure, so you should opt for one for, say a facelift or for facial rejuvenation over other surgeons whose practice is centered on other cosmetic surgery procedures.

You then need to ask about the recovery process. This is key in determining whether this is the right time for you to have a cosmetic procedure or not, as healing will undoubtedly keep you from following your normal, everyday routine such as work and exercise. Can you handle being away for days or weeks?

Lastly, and part of this query, make sure you know of any other specific restrictions, like lifting heavy objects or even carrying small children weeks after the surgery.

Plastic Surgery History 101: About Sushruta

It’s time for a bit of a history lesson. Modern plastic surgery is often credited to Jacques Josef and the group of individuals during his time who invented new ways to improve the appearance of people. But there was one man who practiced facial reconstructive surgery way before them.

Almost 2000 years before Joseph and company laid the foundation of facial plastic surgery as the world knows it today, Sushruta, a physician from ancient India, had been helping people with facial defects through plastic surgery. Historians believe that Sushruta is the first person in history to have ever done it.

In fact, the “Susruta-Samhita,” which is based on the work of Sushruta, is one of the most significant surviving documents on the practice. The main characteristic of the “Susruta-Samhita” that historians and medical experts find mind-boggling is how accurate the accounts are to plastic surgery itself.

According to the Mahabharata, Sushruta comes from a line of healers and sages. His father, Visvamitra himself was known as a legendary sage and progenitor of the Brahmanas.

Sushruta has been a subject of countless research and studies in the past, and there have been instances wherein it was difficult to separate the man from the myth. Though this may be, most historians agree that the accounts of his medical procedures were too accurate to be made from anyone’s imagination.
